If you’re here, it’s because you value a good hair day. Better yet, you value an easy hair day—you know, those days you can just dry shampoo, touch up and go because your precision cut and colour is growing out flawlessly, and your hair has all the body without any of the hot rollers, thank you very much.
Lucky you, I’m here to help you get that kind of hair.
My name is Sarah, but I go by Maki. I could blame my dad for my obsession with hair—he cut my hair until I was 11, and it was not good, friends. So, I became a girl obsessed with good hair days. I started styling my friends’ hair when I was 14 and knew I wanted to be a stylist from then on.
I even moved to London, England for a year to study at Sassoon Academy like the mentors whose skills and style influenced my career so deeply. It’s in London I worked at a Japanese-owned salon, known for its customer experiences—a touch I’ve adopted in my own work as an independent stylist.
Since then, I’ve been mentored by Sassoon hairstylists, completed 10+ classes in cuts, colour and perms, competed in the Canadian Hairstylist of the Year awards (and made the cut as a finalist in four categories), educated stylists on precision cutting, and volunteered as a stylist in hospice.
So, during university, I became the hairwashing girl at a salon for four years—it was my side hustle while I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Family Studies from the University of British Columbia (UBC). No sooner than I graduated from UBC, I enrolled in Hair Art Design at JCI Institute in Vancouver.
I didn’t know it at 14, but I fell in love with hair because I deeply value relationships. Maybe it was those teenage years styling my girlfriends’ hair, maybe it’s because I’m an empath, all I know is there’s no better feeling than good conversation with good people. (And good hair days, obviously.)
